If you haven't heard the news, a SMU student by the name of Meaghan Bosch was recently found dead on the floor of a portable toilet in Hewitt, Texas after apparently overdosing on cocaine. The last communication anyone received from her occurred last Saturday when an ex-boyfriend received a text message saying she was at the house of a drug dealer.
Have you seen a picture of Meaghan? She is a beautiful young woman who looks as if she was maybe in a sorority, perhaps had a boyfriend on the SMU soccer team, or maybe preparing for a career in education or business. So much promise simply lost to what many students at SMU consider a recreational drug.
This makes two students in the last 18 months from SMU who have died from a drug overdose. The other a frat guy who enjoyed drug laced lollipops.
Since two makes a trend, let's examine why this is occurring.
We have a high concentration of upper middle class kids who have ready access to money. Many feel that life's riches are something that is owed, not earned. You also have the eight largest city at their doorstep with its bars, clubs, and of course, high trafficked drugs. This all leads to a high likelihood that when given the choice, many students will choose drugs than not.
What an incredibly sad story and I pray for her family. They were probably preparing for a summer of seeing their bright-eyed child at home, instead they must plan for a funeral.
